Right choices create a large tax burden

| March 17, 2011 7:00 AM

I am a 22-year-old taxpayer who has a really bad itch that needs scratching. I am here to request a little education from my elders and even my peers.

Here is the situation. I am a homeowner, I have a job, and not only do I claim zero all year I also pay property taxes, which I am proud to say I voted yes on the levy. I paid a lot in taxes and I paid a lot in property taxes and I don’t have any children or dependents.

I have a sister who has a child and not married to the father. She makes not quite as much as I do, she gets Medicaid and food stamps, and she also got an almost $6,000 in her tax return when she only paid in what I did, if that.

I finished my taxes and guess what? Yeah that’s right no return for me.

Why do we hand out more in a return than what somebody pays in? The worst part about it is this puts her in a higher income than I am and she didn’t even work for it. A lot of that income she doesn’t have to claim or pay any taxes on here.

What am I doing so wrong when I made a good decision to wait to have kids until I can afford it so I can give them the best life they deserve? Now I pay for these big returns.
