Hawks sweep Bulldogs in softball home opener

SANDPOINT — Rebekah Kastning had a home run, triple, drove in four and scored four times to lead Lakeland to a sweep of 4A North rival Sandpoint on Thursday at Travers Park.

The Hawks (4-5, 2-1 4A IEL) came out swinging early, plating a whopping 11 runs before the Bulldogs (1-3, 0-2 4A IEL) recorded their first out en route to a 16-6 win.

Tifani Schorzman had three RBIs and Erin Ogden three hits for the Hawks in support of Kristin Klopatek, who went the distance in both games.

“We did well offensively, everybody was hitting the ball,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said, praising the relief pitching of Sandpoint’s Carlie Hoerth. “Later in the game they really kept us off-balance.”

Laurel Presser, starting at catcher for the first time, had two hits and scored twice, and Maggie Kirscher added two hits and three RBIs and Kayana Quigley scored twice for the Bulldogs, who outscored the Hawks 6-4 after digging the early deficit.

“I told the girls ‘let’s try to win the rest of the way.’ That’s all you can do and we did,” said Bulldogs head coach Derek Dickinson. “Carlie did a nice job in relief and Laurel was nails back there (catcher).”

Lakeland ripped five doubles and a home run in a 10-2 win in game two, as Klopatek fired a three hitter.

Sandpoint hosts Moscow in a big doubleheader on Saturday.
