Sandpoint Club Lacrosse team drops home opener

SANDPOINT — The good news for the Sandpoint Club Lacrosse team on Friday night was getting to play in the first-ever lacrosse game at War Memorial Field.

The bad news was a second straight setback against University of Spokane, as Sandpoint (1-2) lost 12-9 after a slow start once again proved costly.

“Although we are not showing results in the win/loss column, the progress we are having now that we are on grass is really good,” said head coach Matt Schreiber, whose team lost 12-6 to University earlier in the week. “The game was tough and once again we came out flat.”

Sandpoint worked out the early jitters and dominated for stretches in the second half, using physical play to own the fourth quarter. The nine goals came from seven different players, including seven came by way of assist, and the team was able to fire 40 shots on goal.

“We are playing a very unselfish, team-oriented game and getting a lot of looks at goal,” said Schreiber, who wished to thank Sandpoint Parks and Rec for letting the team play at the multi-sport venue. “Now that we are practicing on grass and work on our finishing, a lot of those shots will start to result in goals.”

Sandpoint hosts Coeur d’Alene on Wednesday, and Bonners Ferry on Thursday. The face off each night is at 5:30 p.m. at War Memorial Field.
