Red-hot hitting leads Bulldogs past Trojans

| April 18, 2012 7:00 AM

SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint softball team put up some crooked numbers early on, pounding out 13 hits to back some solid pitching from senior Maggie Kirscher in a 13-7 win over Post Falls on Tuesday in nonleague softball at Travers Park.

Dara Kolar had three hits for 5A Post Falls (0-11), which scored four runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. Kirscher came in to pitch in the second inning and began posting goose eggs, striking out seven and allowing only three runs, all of which came in the final frame.

The Bulldogs (2-5) scored four runs of their own in the bottom of the first, then posted a seven spot in the second to seize control of the game. Paula Hendrickson and Breanna Buchmiller each had two hits and run scoring doubles, Kirscher added three hits and Calena Lawson and Chloe Logan two apiece.

“We were stringing hits together, running the bases right, and getting key hits. It was fun to see,” said Bulldogs head coach Derek Dickinson. “We’ve been on the other end of that so many times. We spotted them a few runs and came back. The bats were rock solid, and we came out fighting.”

The second game was called due to darkness with the Bulldogs leading 7-5 after three innings.

Cassie Worley and Kolar hit home runs to stake the Trojans to an early 5-2 lead, but once again a much-imroved Bulldogs’ offense responded with a five run inning, sparked by a Kirscher RBI.

Sandpoint is at Lakeland for a big 4A North doubleheader on Thursday.
