Hearing today in deadly crash case

SANDPOINT — A preliminary hearing is set today for a Clark Fork woman accused of fleeing the scene of a deadly collision with a motorcyclist.

Brianna Lucille Knapp can either waive the hearing and be bound over to stand trial in 1st District Court for leaving the scene of an injury crash, a felony. Knapp could also compel the state to put up enough evidence to convince a judge that a trial is warranted.

Knapp, according to court records, is also scheduled to enter pleas to misdemeanor charges of driving with a suspended license and without insurance.

Knapp, 28, was charged after turning herself in to authorities following the July 24 collision in which an off-duty police officer was killed.

Idaho State Police said Kurt P. Henson riding westbound with a passenger when he hit an abrupt lane edge in a construction zone and crashed. Knapp, who was also headed west in a Dodge pickup truck, crashed into the downed bike and ran over Henson, according to an ISP report.

Henson, 47, of Post Falls, died at the scene. State police said he was not wearing a helmet. A passenger on Henson’s Harley-Davidson, 43-year-old Kimberly Lenox, also of Post Falls, survived the crash.

Knapp is accused of leaving the scene and abandoning her stricken pickup along the highway.

The crash happened on Highway 200 near Clark Fork. At the time of crashes, the Idaho Transportation Department was reconstructing the highway, work that left a 3- to 4-inch height difference between the two lanes of travel.

In her interview with an ISP trooper, Knapp acknowledged hitting nothing more than the abrupt lane edge. She denied consuming alcohol on the day of the crash, but admitted during the interview that there was a container of alcohol from the previous day, according to the report.

Knapp was convicted of driving under the influence in 2006, according to the Idaho Supreme Court data repository.
