At least city gets timely accounting

| August 14, 2012 7:00 AM

The Sandpoint City Council appears to be taking good and prudent steps regarding its budget decisions. When government officials are in the habit of spending to justify their jobs, it is difficult to face the fact that cuts in spending may be necessary.

Economic forecasts are merely forecasts — not predictions — and economic conditions pertaining to Sandpoint may not be the same as those of the state of Idaho or the entire United States. To apply to Sandpoint forecasts that apply to the U.S. or to any place else, may create for the citizens of Sandpoint the conditions that have undermined cities in California and Pennsylvania.

Quest Aircraft would be unlikely to be so reckless. At least the Sandpoint City Council can make its decisions based upon a timely and transparent accounting of the city’s finances — unlike what appears to be confronting the Bonner County commissioners.
