Gagnon leads Bulldogs to win

| August 22, 2012 7:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Jeremiah Gagnon scored a goal right before the half, and Jake Rookey posted a shutout in his first start in goal to lead Sandpoint to a 1-0 win over Lake City in nonleague boys soccer Tuesday at Centennial Field.

The Bulldogs (1-1) got on the board in the 39th minute after Gagnon took a feed from Matthew Burgstahler, used a couple of quick moves to free some space and then blasted a low shot past a diving Tanner Horton.

The goal proved the game winner for the Bulldogs, whose defense was much improved from the first outing, as was their competitive fire.

“We played with a different attitude from the first game,” said Bulldogs head coach Adam Tajan, referring to a 3-1 loss to Coeur d’Alene on Saturday. “We had the desire and attitude to step up and battle.”

Horton tallied five saves for the Timberwolves (0-1), who were working out some wrinkles in their season-opener.
