SANDPOINT — Residents who want to help the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail and have a little fun at the same time are in luck.

Several events are in line that will help the group raise revenue for their $400,000 goal while providing memorable experiences. Thanks to some great support, the group has raised $240,000 already, but that’s no cause for complacency.

“Though we are very pleased with our progress so far, we still need to continue to work hard if we are going to reach our financial goal,” said Jon Sayler, president of the Board of the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail. “We encourage community members to continue to support our work and to participate in events.”

First up on Saturday, nationally recognized country singer-songwriter Tom Shepherd is giving a performance at the Ponderay Garden Center starting 5 p.m. Supported by opening band Bennie and Bonnie, the evening promises to be filled with great music, heartfelt lyrics and humorous reflections. The show is a part of the “Concerts for a Cause” series sponsored by Horizon Credit Union and the Ponderay Garden Center.

Attendees are free to bring a picnic dinner or grab beer, wine and food at the concert and also have a chance to win door prizes, including a “Stay, Soak and Float” package from Quinn’s Hot Springs and Row Adventures. The show is free of charge, but representatives will be on hand to accept donations for the trail.

Shepherd, best known for penning hit singles like “My Texas,” “Beer Season,” “Redneck Yacht Club,” and “Riding With Private Malone,” has a writing credit on more than 90 songs performed by some of country’s biggest names. And with his skillful singing and guitar-playing, Shepherd’s musical talents extend well past the songwriting.

According to representatives of Friends of the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail, the show was a bit of a surprise for everyone involved. However, when members learned Shepherd was in town visiting family, they convinced him to lend his talents to the cause.

“Paint the Trail” is also under way and will be until Aug. 29. After completing their masterpieces, artists can drop them off at the Arts Alliance (518 Oak St.).

Finally, those fond of a good drink should check out Laughing Dog Brewery’s Firkin Friday on Sept. 7 starting 5 p.m. The evening will include brews from a special keg, live music, pizza, raffle prizes and a silent auction all benefiting the trail.
