Weme goal propels Bulldogs past Trojans
SANDPOINT — Junior Emma Weme controlled a through ball from Jennifer Meulenberg, raced up the right side and finished with a low shot, leading Sandpoint to a 1-0 win over Post Falls in nonleague girls soccer on Tuesday at Centennial Field.
The early first half goal proved all the Bulldogs (1-0-2) would need, earning their first win while handing the Trojans their first loss. Defenders Corinne Ariss, Alanna Robinson, Kendra Corless, Jennifer Meulenberg and Brooke Obaitek were well organized in the back third.
After two ties to start off the season, Sandpoint head coach Conor Baranski made a couple of tweaks in strategy that paid dividends.
“We changed the lineup a little, with more true wings, and the girls executed it really well,” said Baranski, who wanted more possession from his team. “I’m happy with the clean sheet, but we still have a lot to work on.”
Makayla Sundquist earned the shutout with eight saves, including a big one late in the second half after a high blast by dangerous Post Falls striker Kelcie Hedge.
Freshman keeper Aneesah Gondo was solid in goal for the Trojans (4-1), stopping 12 shots during a busy game.
