Irreverent depiction was inappropriate
We were upset to see an irreverent depiction of the pope and of Catholic morality in last Thursday’s Daily Bee editorial section.
Ironically, the cartoon appeared days after Human Rights Day. The Bonner County Human Rights Task Force creed includes, among other things, language rejecting intimidation and harassment based on religion. Brenda Hammond, task force president, in a recent guest opinion stated: “We (BCHRTF) believe that our words of respect for the dignity of each individual will also lead to action – and inevitably to a community in which everyone’s strength and contribution is valued and encouraged.”
We believe the decision to publish the cartoon was inexcusable. There will be those who attempt to defend it as “humor” and cite freedom of speech and of the press. We, too, cherish all the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution of this great country, but we understand that along with those freedoms, there comes responsibility. Not everything permissible is judicious. Not everything permissible is respectful. Not everything permissible is appropriate. Some cartoons are definitely not humorous.
Again Ms. Hammond: “Those who wish to live in a community where all can be free of fear and intimidation, where inclusion, diversity and respect are valued, have not only the right, but the responsibility to make our voices heard.”
Merry Christmas — Jesus is the reason.
