Dillon, Dunton lead Bulldog wrestlers past Timberwolves

COEUR d’ALENE — Peyton Dillon (120 pounds) and Lewis Dunton (125 pounds) each picked up two wins to lead the ever-improving Sandpoint wrestling team to a split with 5A Lewiston and Lake City on Tuesday in a tri-match at Coeur d’Alene.

Dillon, Dunton and Colton Redding picked up the lone three wins in a 69-10 loss against Lewiston, currently the No. 1 ranked 5A team in the state by IdahoWrestlingNews.com.

Justin Pepperdine lost a tough 1-0 decision at 182 pounds, and Matt Lockey was defaulted for an illegal slam.

The Bulldogs ran their dual record on the season to 5-12 after an impressive 44-36 win over host Lake City. Adam Weindl picked up a first period pin at 170 pounds, Josh Travers scored a second period pin after bumping up a weight class to 220, Tanner McNelly (106) notched a second period pin and Lockey jumped up to 285 pounds to score a first period pin for the Bulldogs.

Lake City head coach Corey Owen, whose team lost 49-24 to the Bengals, said he had his wrestlers pumped up vs. Lewiston and they had a hard time maintaining that energy vs. Sandpoint. Still, he praised the improving Bulldog program.

“They’re getting better every year,” said Owen, in his fourth year at Lake City. “I’m impressed with what (coach) Mike (Randles) is doing; each year it’s gotten a little closer. This is the first time I’ve lost to them.”

Sandpoint will now turn its attention to the 4A Region 1 championships at Lakeland on Feb. 18, where berths to state will be decided.
