NEWPORT — Two Priest River residents were killed and a third was injured in a rollover crash on U.S. Highway 2 in Pend Oreille County on Tuesday night.

Mary E. Page, 62, and Maxine A. Chappell, 90, were pronounced dead at the the scene, according to the Washington State Patrol. Ronald J. Chappell, the driver, survived the crash and was taken to Newport Community Hospital. He was later released.

The state patrol said Ronald Chappell was headed north when his 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass drifted into the southbound lane and went off the highway. The four-door sedan struck a fence and ditch before overturning onto its top in a yard.

The crash happened shortly after 10:30 p.m. about seven miles south of Newport.

Ronald Chappell and Page were wearing seat belts, but it was unclear if Maxine Page was restrained, according to WSP. Investigators don’t believe intoxication was a factor in the collision and criminal charges are not expected.
