Olin's big night not enough against Bears
MOSCOW — Jackson Olin had a stellar night offensively, but poor team free throw shooting proved costly, as the Bulldogs fell 67-61 to Moscow in the second round of the 4A Region 1 boys basketball tournament Thursday night at the Bear Den.
Olin showed why he’s one of the most dangerous offensive players in the Inland Empire League, dropping in a game-high 27 points and nailing six baskets from beyond the arc.
While Olin’s scoring kept the game close, a 10-22 showing from the free throw line, including the front end of a host of one-and-ones, ultimately was too much to overcome for the No. 3 seed Bulldogs (8-14).
“We can’t come on the road and not shoot well from the free throw line and win,” said Bulldogs head coach Tyler Haynes, whose team also gave up a lot of second chance points on the offensive glass.
Jeremiah Gagnon scored 10 off the bench and Tyler Howk added eight points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs, who could not get closer than five points in the second half. Sam Nitcy and Ryan Schwartz each added five assists in defeat.
Derreck Pennington scored 15 points to lead the No. 1 seed Bears (11-10), who remain undefeated in 4A North play.
Sandpoint will now face No. 2 Lakeland in a loser-out game on Saturday, at 7 p.m. at Lakeland High School.
The game will be carried live on AM 1400.
