Ordinance offers hope, broadens our humanity

| January 1, 2012 6:00 AM

To those of you who are offended by the new antidiscrimination ordinance adding sexual orientation and gender expression the list of protections provided to Sandpoint citizens, please remember that prior to its enactment, there was an open hearing and discussion in the Daily Bee.

At no time was there an outpouring of homophobic public sentiment against its passage. Most Sandpoint folks understand that offering these additional protections broadens our collective humanity, adds to the many reasons why people choose to live here and, in keeping with the season, offers hope to those who need it most.

Perhaps you are unaware of the very high suicide rate among gay teens or the crying need to ameliorate bullying in our schools. Instead of “an authoritarian city council,” we see a legislative body seeking to offer protection to still-vulnerable people. We applaud our City Council and see their actions as a force for growth in the mindset of Sandpoint citizenry.
