Kirscher, defense propel Bulldog girls to win

ST. MARIES — Senior Maggie Kirscher stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists to lead the Bulldogs past the Lumberjacks in a nonleague girls basketball game Thursday night in St. Maries.

“They went 10 of 11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines said. “It was a close game throughout, but we couldn’t hit our foul shots in the fourth quarter and they did.”

Jordan Speelmon had seven steals for Sandpoint (7-9), which improved dramatically in two areas, committing just 10 turnovers and allowing only four offensive rebounds.

Kara Bruce added five points and five steals, and Nikole Alamillo grabbed five rebounds for the Bulldogs, who clamped down defensively.

Kaytrin Thaut had 13 points for St. Maries (4-7).

Sandpoint is at Lake City on Tuesday.
