SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint Elks Women’s Golf Association held its annual tournament to raise funds for cancer research, with more than 40 local golfers teeing it up last weekend for a great cause. A whopping $840 was raised and all participants were winners in fight against breast cancer.

The tournament was dedicated to longtime Elks member Marilyn Wooden, who succumbed to cancer in February of this year. Thanks to the strides made in treatment in recent years, she lived for more than 20 years after first being diagnosed.

She won the President’s Cup three times and was the club president in 1981. She also had many interests besides golf, but the game was was such an important stress-relieving outlet for her busy life filled with children, bridge, fishing and church.

Two of her daughters, Cyndy and Cheryl, were invited to the event honoring their mother.

Linda Hunt won a hybrid club for having her drive closest to the line on hole No 3. Mary Stevens had the longest putt on hole No. 9 and Hunt, Nita Garvey and Lorna Low posted the winning team score with a 38.

Kim Edwards was recognized for her contributions to the group. Thanks was also given to Sandy Jamieson, Barda Cameron and Loris Michael for their table decorations.

Any ladies who would like to join this fun group for golf are invited to come to the Elks course on Wednesday mornings at 7:15 a.m. for 18 holes and 8:15 a.m. for 9 holes. The group will play through the month of September.
