Shelter filled with care, compassion

| July 19, 2012 7:00 AM

I’m confused by the July 1 guest opinion of Patty Earnest and Dave Ross.

Since February 2011, I have been: a volunteer, an employee and a volunteer again at the Panhandle Animal Shelter. I was a volunteer when the authors were volunteers. I found them long on giving orders and criticism but short on providing any labor toward solving problems. They were given the “old heave ho” in May 2011 because they had become so divisive that none of the staff or volunteers would work with them.

I find it strange that this “opinion” would be submitted a year later? They just now get around to submitting it? Could it be that the Bee just finally got around to printing it? Either way this “opinion” does a disservice to the Panhandle Animal Shelter. It’s “old news” from disgruntled people. Be that as it may, the “opinion” is full of half-truths and total falsehoods.

I have volunteered at the Sacramento “kill” shelter, so I’ve seen the worst possible. When I retired to Sandpoint, I was amazed that each dog had its own cage, was fed and watered each morning, its cage sanitized daily and was taken outside twice a day. The vaccines are refrigerated, and through the generosity of three local veterinarians no animal goes without care. The staff works very hard at finding homes for all the animals while making them as comfortable as possible.
