Drivers, bicyclists both need to follow rules

| July 26, 2012 7:00 AM

I don’t know what good this will do, but if it educates one driver, it will be worth it.

There have been many letters to the Bee concerning drivers versus bicyclists. Now most of us agree that there needs to be more awareness on both sides concerning the obeying of the rules of the road. But speaking from the point of view of a biking enthusiast, drivers, when you do see a bicyclist obeying the rules/signs, then please do what you are supposed to do.

On Saturday, July 21, I biked the entire Pine Street loop. I came back through Dover on the bike path to the Ontario Street highway crossing.

I was in the traffic lane, straddling my bike, my right foot down, stopped at the stop sign. The marked crosswalk was 40 feet to my left. What happened? A large red pickup coming from town, stopped at the crosswalk, turned on its emergency flashers and expected me to cross when it had the right of way and as traffic came from Dover and was not stopping.

And many wonder why bicyclists take liberties. It’s because of incidents like these. We don’t know what to expect half the time. If you want us to obey the rules of the road, then you do so as well. Do what you are expected to do and a biker will do what they are expected to do. (Granted, young children now may be a different story).
