| June 21, 2012 7:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Volunteers are needed Saturday to help repair parts of the Mickinnick Trail.

A U.S. Forest Service trail crew and volunteers are gathering at the trailhead at 9 a.m. The work is scheduled to be wrapped up by 1 p.m.

Tools and light refreshments will be provided at the trailhead. Volunteers are urged to wear sturdy boots.

The work coincides with National Trails Day. The first 25 volunteers to sign in at the trailhead will receive a National Trails Day T-shirt.

Volunteers are encouraged to sign up by calling the Sandpoint Ranger District at 263-5111.

The work slated to be done includes the installation of water bars and other stormwater drainage features.

Weeds around the trailhead are also getting out of control.

Maintenance of the trail and attendant facilities has been done by volunteers since the trail was established in 2005. Friends of Mickinnick Trail is grateful for the volunteer support it receives.

“The trail is used and enjoyed daily through rain, snow, hail and sun by thousands of people each year,” said Jan Griffitts, director of Friends of the Mickinnick Trail.

Friends of the trail are also thankful for the support of the city, Forest Service, Kinnikinnick Native Plant Society, Bonner County Gardeners Association, Idaho Fish & Game, Pend Oreille Master Naturalists, and Ken Richey of the Bonner County Juvenile Community Services.
