Key Club gives to meal program
SANDPOINT — High school Key Club members’ work at Super 1 is going to help keep seniors fed this year.
Members Cheyanne Baughan and Samantha Katana dropped by Super 1 Wednesday afternoon to donate $150 to Sandpoint Senior Center Joyce Drush. According to Drush, the money will be used to keep their home-delivered meal program on the road this coming year.
“With the challenging economy and all the other struggles these days, these are the kind of donations that keep us going,” Drush said.
Baughan and Katana, along with three other Key Club members, earned the money by working at Super 1 during Super Bowl weekend.
According to store manager Steve Furin, their help was much needed at the grocery store. With the Super Bowl only second to Thanksgiving for the most amount of food consumed at once, Super 1 set up their Super Sample Saturday event to help meet demand.
The Key Club members manned booths, distributed samples and earned $10 an hour for their time. They chose the Sandpoint Senior Center as the beneficiary for their work.
Drush said the donation is much appreciated. This year, the center will be delivering 1,600 meals to homebound seniors, and any help maintaining that program is always welcome.
“The Key Club has been instrumental in supporting a lot of nonprofits around the area,” Furin said.
