Hull running for prosecutor

SANDPOINT — Former Bonner County Prosecutor Tevis Hull is seeking re-election to the post.

Hull, who was the county’s prosecutor from 1993 to 1997, is running as an independent. Hull successfully ran as an independent in 1992 and became the county’s first full-time prosecutor.

“My broad background of aggressive prosecution, mediation, civil litigation, solving disputes, offering a listening ear and working with multiple different agencies allow me to offer Bonner County a prosecutor that understands his legal and ethical role and provides professionalism in the performance of his duties,” Hull said in a statement announcing his candidacy.

Incumbent Prosecutor Louis Marshall is currently running unopposed for the Republican nomination in the May 15 primary. He’ll face Hull and Sandpoint attorney Michael Waldrup, also an independent, in the Nov. 6 general election.

During his term as Bonner County’s prosecutor, Hull created the county’s victim/witness program and encouraged the purchase of software program which enabled the prosecutor’s and sheriff’s offices to exchange information.

In addition to prosecuting violent and sex crimes, Hull managed four attorneys, six staff members and brought on an investigator without raising the budget.

The last contested race for prosecutor occurred in 1996, according to county elections chief Marie Scott. In that contest, Republican Phil Robinson rebuffed challenges by Topp and Hull.

Hull currently serves as Boundary County’s appointed chief criminal deputy prosecuting attorney, a position he previously occupied from 2004-2007. He prosecutes felony and misdemeanor matters, in addition to handling juvenile and child-protection cases.

He also chairs the Boundary County’s drug and child abuse task forces.

Hull was the city of Sandpoint’s appointed prosecutor in 2000 and has also been in private practice since 1997.

Hull graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1978 and attained a bachelor of science degree from the University of Idaho in 1986. He earned his law degree from the university’s law school three years later.

SANDPOINT — Bonner County hasn’t had a contested prosecutor’s race since 1996, according to elections chief Marie Scott.

Republican Phil Robinson won that race with 5,209 votes. Democrat John Topp and independent Tevis Hull finished with 4,616 and 4,419 votes, respectively. Robinson’s victory turned Hull out of office after a four-year term.

In 1992, Hull defeated Topp by a 123-vote margin to win the general election.
