Spartans capitalize on Bulldog errors on Senior Night
SANDPOINT — The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings, before seven errors proved their undoing, falling 11-4 to Priest River during nonleague softball action on Senior Night Friday at rain-soaked Travers Park.
Senior Maggie Kirscher had two hits, and Breanna Buchmiller drove in two runs to lead Sandpoint, but errors led to two big innings for the Spartans, who plated nine runs in the third and fourth inning to break the game open.
“I would have liked to send our seniors out on a better note,” said Bulldogs head coach Derek Dickinson, calling it a tough loss. “It’s not the way we want to go into districts.”
Catcher Ayonna Lentz had three singles and Brittany Krampert two for the Spartans (12-4), and Krampert and Kelsey Bradbury combined to hold the Bulldogs to just six hits.
Kirscher, Kayanna Quigley, Laurel Presser, Paula Hendrickson, Carlie Hoerth and Chloe Logan were each honored on Senior Night.
The No. 3 seed Bulldogs now turn their attention to the 4A Region 1 tournament on Tuesday in Lakeland, where they’ll face No. 2 Moscow in the opener, looking for the first league win of the season.
“Now we’re 0-0,” said Dickinson. “We’re going to give it our best shot.”
