Bulldogs hammer Vikings; ready for districts

| May 8, 2012 7:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Kevin Kirby and Kane Wijngaarden dropped only one game between them in straight singles win, part of a boys sweep as the Bulldogs handled the 5A Vikings 8-4 in a tennis match Monday at sunny Travers Park.

The Buckmiller brothers were also sharp at No. 1 boys doubles, dropping just two games in a straight set win, as the entire Bulldog team is rounding into form before districts.

Megan Rockwell and Courtney Windju won the lone match against a very strong Viking girls team, rallying for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1 girls doubles against a Viking team that had been undefeated in league play, and will be the top-seeded 5A team at districts.

“After losing the first set, Megan took over at the net and Courtney became amazingly consistent,” said Bulldogs head coach Kent Anderson. “Coeur d’Alene had no answer.”

Anderson also had high praise for the play of Carson Nygren and Nicolette Jessen at No. 1 mixed doubles, as the duo simply continues to win.

“Nicolette’s steady ground strokes combined with Carson’s aggressive net game and strong serve was too much for Coeur d’Alene,” said Anderson.

The Bulldogs will now fine tune their games in preparation for Friday and Saturday’s 4A Region 1 tennis championships, which start at 9 a.m. at Travers Park.
