Thornton, McMahon remain undefeated in league play
LEWISTON — The Clark Fork No. 1 girls doubles team of Brocklynn Thornton and Claire McMahon remained undefeated in league play on Saturday, downing Grangeville 6-2, 6-0 to lead the Wampus Cats in the final league tuneup in Lewiston on Saturday.
Stillman Berkley and Tristin Bristol won 7-5, 6-3 over Clearwater, before falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to Grangeville in a tight three-set match at No. 1 boys doubles.
Both teams will be seeded No. 1 at the district tournament, which kicks off on Friday at the University of Idaho courts.
Annie Wurm and Geoffrey Boudousquie each lost to their Grangeville opponents in straight sets, but earned the respect of head coach Mary Jo Lambert.
“Annie and Geoffrey played the best tennis this season. Greg played really smart and physical,” said Lambert. “They are the future of the program.”
Lyndsie Kiebert and Heather Wold beat Deary 7-5, 6-2, securing the No. 2 seed in the district doubles draw, as the pair are hoping to join Thornton and McMahon at state.
Sami Meyer lost 6-4, 6-4 to Grangeville at No. 1 girls singles, and Tala Fehsel and Allen Blankenship lost 6-1, 3-6 and 7-6 at No. 1 mixed doubles in a match that came down to a third set tie-breaker. Jon May and Autumn Wagoner lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 mixed doubles to round out the Clark Fork action.
Lambert loves how her doubles teams are peaking just in time for districts and state.
“All of the seniors are playing the best tennis of their careers,” said Lambert. “The coaching staff, including Becky Thornton and Lyn McMahon, will be pushing them the next two weeks.”
