SANDPOINT — There figures to be plenty of Mayville State football fans in Sandpoint next fall, as seniors Jake Clad and Nick Magro signed letters-of-intent this week to play football for the NAIA school in North Dakota next fall.

Clad, a 6-1, 180 pound receiver/safety, and Magro, a 6-2, 210 pound tight end/linebacker, will join former teammates R.J. Webber and Tyler Navarro in playing for the Comets of the Dakota Athletic Conference next season.

Clad, who injured his knee at the beginning of his senior season, is eager to play football at the next level, especially after missing a year.

“Oh man, it means all the work in high school paid off,” said Clad, who plans to study biology and kinesiology in college. “Being part of something bigger than myself. I want to push it to the next level and make championships happen.”

Magro, who hopes to study fitness, was preparing to go visit a California JC when Mayville State called and offered to help out with his tuition.

“It’s a life dream accomplished. It’s what I’ve been working for,” said Magro of the chance to play in college. “I’m looking forward to having that chemistry with those guys all four years, and starting a new life.”

Former SHS assistant coach Casey McLaughlin believes both players have the potential to make an impact at the next level.

“Jake was our most explosive and dynamic player last year and I have no doubt that he has the ability to play at the next level. I am incredibly proud of his growth as a football player and as a young man,” said McLaughin. “Nick is a very versatile athlete who can compete in a number of positions that range from linebacker to receiver. It will be fun to watch him because he is just starting to reach his athletic potential.”
