Sandpoint dominates singles action at 4A regional tourney

SANDPOINT — It will be all-Sandpoint finals in boys singles, girls singles and boys doubles after a solid first day for the Bulldog tennis team at the 4A Region 1 tennis tournament Friday afternoon at sun-soaked Travers Park.

The de facto team challenge matches will carry not only bragging rights, but the automatic berth to the state tournament.

Kevin Kirby avenged an earlier season loss to Moscow’s Hunter Levy with a convincing straight set dispatching in boys singles, setting up a final against teammate and hitting partner Kane Wijngaarden.

“Kevin didn’t play Hunter’s game at all,” said Bulldogs coach Kent Anderson of the difference the second time around. “As soon as he got the opportunity, he moved in.”

Alex Hon and Talbot Callister registered an upset, at least according to seed, by beating Lakeland’s Godwin Peck and Matthew Peck 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a boys doubles match that featured a big momentum shift.

“They started slow,” said Anderson of Hon and Callister. “Then they just wailed on them.”

Hon and Callister will face teammates Drew and Micah Buckmiller in the finals. Kennedy Search and Michele Rockwell rolled through the girls singles draw to set up the third all-Sandpoint final in girls singles.

The consolation action starts at 9 a.m. today at Travers Park, with the main draw finals slated to start at 10:30 a.m. The losers of the finals will then face the winners of the consolation bracket in the true double-elimination tournament, with the top two from each bracket advancing to state.
