Burglary suspect waives hearing
SANDPOINT — An accused burglar who was subdued by a Sandpoint councilman last month waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday.
Stanley Evan Richardson Jr.’s waiver amounts to tacit acknowledgment that the state has enough evidence to justify a trial in 1st District Court.
Bonner County Magistrate Court Judge Justin Julian accepted Richardson’s waiver and set a May 21 arraignment hearing in district court. He remains jailed with his bail set at $25,000.
Richardson, 18, was apprehended as he allegedly rifled through the vehicles belonging to Councilman Justin Schuck and his wife on April 24. Schuck confronted the teen with a shotgun and detained him, according to a Sandpoint police report.
Richardson reportedly told police he was new to the city and trying to find a shortcut back to his home when he was confronted by Schuck.
Richardson had a breath-alcohol level of 0.07, which is just below the legal limit for an adult to drive. He was subsequently cited for underage consumption of alcohol and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. A trial date on those charges is pending, court records show.
