Alamillo, Levora shine during first day of state track

SANDPOINT — Nikole Alamillo uncorked a throw of 126 feet, easily enough to win the discus and lead the Sandpoint girls to a 5th place finish among 19 teams during the first day of the 4A state track and field meet in Boise.

Alamillo claimed Sandpoint’s first state title this year, and joins her mom and coach Laura Alamillo as a state champion in the discus. Laura won her state title as a senior, and Nikole did her one better by winning a title as a sophomore.

“She worked hard all season and had a good day,” described Laura, calling the title awesome. “I’m so proud. As a sophomore, she’s already beaten my senior mark.”

Fellow sophomore Sam Levora also had a stellar day, crushing the Sandpoint school record in the 3,200 by four seconds, clocking a 9:39 to finish third in the 3,200. With two elite runners in the race, it was essentially a race for third, and Levora mixed strategy and conditioning to find a spot on the podium.

“Sam let them (leaders) go in lap two, then at about six laps he drove to the finish and extended the gap,” said distance running coach Matt Brass of Levora’s solid race. “He did exactly what we wanted.”

The boys team is 12th out of 19 teams after day one.

The state meet wraps up today.
