Everyone is invited to human rights meeting
Although I typically do not condone publicizing the hateful antics of racist individuals or groups, in this case I applaud David Keyes’ decision to expose KKK member, Shaun Winkler. Mr. Winkler ran for the position of sheriff of Bonner County, an office which carries significant responsibilities. His credentials, qualifications, and philosophy should be revealed to voters who need to make informed decisions. If Mr. Winkler is burning crosses on his front yard, I surely want to know about it!
The Bee’s article was not provocative, it was designed to inform. It was not inequitable: the comments of Brenda Hammond, secretary of the Bonner County Human Rights Task Force, were included in the article.
What is essential now is that we all show our support for human rights in our community by attending the annual meeting of the Bonner County Human Rights Task Force today, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Panhandle Health Building (322 S. Marion Street) to determine what we each can do to promote peace and unity in Bonner County.
Tony Stewart, one of the founders of the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations, will share his experiences and ideas at this meeting.
More than anything, our community needs to come together to let these few individuals and groups know that we do not agree with, nor will we stand for, their hateful philosophies.
