Which view of morality is correct?

| November 15, 2012 6:00 AM

Our nation is divided between two kinds of people: Those who believe in moral absolutes and those who believe in moral relativism.

The first group is generally religious and their world view is supported by their belief in God, whereas the second group generally leaves decisions involving morality to society or government. The first group typically believes that certain actions are wrong because God condemns them, whereas the second group typically deems actions as acceptable or even normal if the majority supports them.

Which view of morality is correct?

The answer can be found in a simple illustration: While on vacation to a country which is hostile toward Americans, you are arrested and threatened with execution. Is there any reason they should not kill you?

Can you say, “Because God said murder is wrong”?

Or, being in a foreign society with a different set of moral laws, must you die?
