| November 28, 2012 6:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Johnny Hayden scored a game-high 21 points, and Timberlake built an early 12-3 lead and never trailed, downing Sandpoint 67-57 in a nonleague boys basketball opener Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.

Hayden finished 10-10 from the free throw line and Trevor Masterson added 16 points for the Tigers (1-0), who were able to capitalize on a number of point blank looks down low.

Matthew Burgstahler shot 7-9 from the field en route to 17 points to lead the Bulldogs (0-1), and Nick Nelson added 11.

The Bulldogs trailed by 15 points in the first half, before four late free throws by Collin Jurenka cut the lead to 35-24 at half.

A late fourth quarter rally brought the score to 59-54 in the final minute, as close as the Bulldogs would get on the night.

Sandpoint hosts Colville on Saturday night at 6 p.m. after the girls game.
