Logan goals propel Bulldogs past Bears
SANDPOINT — With his team trailing 1-0 at half time on Senior Night, Sandpoint head coach Adam Tajan had some loud and pointed words for his team during the intermission.
Whatever he said was taken to heart, as the Bulldogs scored three goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to earn a 3-2 win over the Bears in 4A North boys soccer Tuesday at War Memorial Field.
Moscow (3-8-2, 0-3 4A IEL) drew first blood in the 16th minute when a high, lofted free kick from 40 yards out sailed over the head of Sandpoint keeper Austin Keyes for the only goal of the first half.
Junior Joab Logan scored the equalizer four minutes into the second half after dribbling through three defenders and slotting a shot just inside the post, then added the go-ahead goal four minutes later off an assist from Anthony Fox.
Jeremiah Gagnon would add a key insurance goal in the 54th minute for the Bulldogs (9-5-2, 2-2 4A IEL), who earned the right to host the Bears in the first round of the upcoming district tournament with the win.
“I liked how we came out in the first 10 minutes of the second half and buried our chances,” said Bulldogs head coach Adam Tajan. “It’s nice to see Joab get on the board. He’s a guy we knew could score, and you need guys to catch fire at the end of the season.”
Tim Thoreson, Adam Murray, Caleb Ehly, Anthony Fox, Raleigh Hanson, Logan Broehl, Austin Keyes and Jeffrey Rokstad were honored on Senior Night. Many of the senior spent their summers and springs playing club soccer, earning the respect of Tajan.
“The time, effort and work they’ve put in through the years,” said Tajan of what sticks out most about his senior class. “They’re really dedicated to being Bulldog soccer players.”
Sandpoint hosts Moscow on Monday, at 3:30 p.m. in the 4A Region 1 tournament opener. The winner of the loser-out game will travel to Lakeland for the championship and lone 4A North berth to state.
