Riley-to-Akre connection leads Spartans to win

| October 6, 2012 7:00 AM

PRIEST RIVER — Cameron Riley and R.C. Akre connected three times on touchdowns for Priest River in a 49-28 Intermountain League win over Kellogg.

Riley, a senior, completed 22 passes for 242 yards and gained 111 yards on the ground with six total touchdowns for Priest River (4-2, 1-0 IML).

“I just told him to throw me the ball and I would catch it,” a joking Akre said after the game. “Plays worked out in our favor. He (Akre) seemed to always be in the right area at the right time,” added Riley.

Cody Seaton scored twice for Kellogg (0-7, 0-2 IML), which found themselves down 29-0 in the second quarter.

“We started slow and couldn’t catch back up,” Kellogg coach Tyrel Hendrix said. Adding that “not carrying out assignments” cost his team. “Football is a game of assignments and we didn’t do a good job of handling those assignments tonight,” he said.

Akre caught 11 passes on 14 targets and picked up 117 yards receiving for the Spartans, who travel to Bonners Ferry on Friday.

Jared Job had a 17-yard touchdown run and James Red completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Garret Wendt for the Wildcats, who close out the regular season on Oct. 19 against Bonners Ferry.
