Wampus Cats run wild over Tigers in rout
CLARK FORK — The Clark Fork High School home crowd was treated to a classic game of high-scoring eight-man football as the Wampus Cats overwhelmed the visiting Mullan Tigers 80-34.
The Cats led from the start, scoring three unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter, ending the first period 22-0. Mullan finally scored with ten minutes left on the clock in the second quarter. From then on it was a scoring fest with the two teams trading touchdowns time and again, with the halftime scoreboard showing a Clark Fork lead of 52-20.
During the third quarter the Mullan Tigers were able to score two more touchdowns, but it was to no avail as the Clark Fork Wampus Cats put the pedal down and ran the score up to 80-34 — putting the 45-point mercy rule into effect. The game ended with 9:33 left in the fourth quarter.
“The guys came out and really ran the yards and dominated with speed and power,” said head coach Brian Arthun, enjoying his team’s second victory in a row after the Wampus Cats defeated Lewis County 44-6 last week at the University of Idaho Kibbie dome. “It is good to get a big win over a North Star League rival. Mullan fought hard with a lot of heart and did really well.”
Clark Fork senior Joey Hazinsky had a memorable night, rushing for a total of 275 yards and seven touchdowns.. Senior Axel Anderson was nearly on the same pace, adding an additional 198 yards and three scores. Senior quarterback Zack Klein aired out 88 yards in passing, before being relieved by freshman Jake Aguirre, who came late into the game to take a few snaps.
