SANDPOINT — It was a thing of beauty, the game-winning goal by Tim Thoreson, leading Sandpoint to a hard-fought 1-0 win over Lake City on Wednesday under the lights of War Memorial Field.

Thoreson blasted the game’s only goal at a sharp angle from 15 yards out, slicing a high kick into the corner of the net in the 48th minute past diving Lake City goalie Tanner Horton.

“That was one heck of a shot by that kid. Tanner was fully extended and still almost got it,” said Lake City head coach Chad Beadell, lauding the unique soccer venue on the lake. “This is one heck of an atmosphere to play in. Both teams were amped up, and you have people chanting.”

Wind gusts of more than 30 mph presented a challenge for both teams, and Lake City (2-2) just missed a couple of chances for the equalizer late in the game.

Sandpoint (5-2) head coach Adam Tajan said it’s never easy playing Lake City, and felt his team had its best energy level of the season, befitting a home match at War Memorial Field.

Tajan praised the play of defender Jared Cooper, who is new to varsity, for keeping the dangerous Lake City wings in check.

“He was outstanding in the back, shutting down their fast guys on the flank,” said Tajan, who called Thoreson’s goal a beauty. “A nice little bender to the back post.”

Austin Keyes had eight saves to earn the shutout in goal, battling a stiff headwind in the second half.
