Lemieux, Miners too much for Wampus Cats
CLARK FORK — Levi Lemieux ran for a whopping 401 yards on 21 carries, leading the Miners to a 58-12 North Star League win over the Wampus Cats on Homecoming Night in Clark Fork.
Lemieux scored on runs of 70 and 46 yards to stake the Miners (3-2) to a 38-6 halftime lead, as penalties and turnovers proved costly for the Wampus Cats (2-3).
Joey Hazinsky hauled in a 36-yard strike from Zack Klein for the Cats’ lone first half touchdown, but that was the only highlight in a tough first half. Klein completed 14-27 passes on the night for 127 yards, and Hazinsky had 90 yards receiving, as the Cats were able to move the ball at times. However some missed open field tackles proved costly, as is often the case in eight-man football.
“I thought we played better as a team than the last couple of weeks, it just came down to turnovers,” said Cats coach Brian Arthun. “We made some good defensive stops, we just need to stop shooting ourselves in the foot.”
Arthun loved how his team responded in the second half, as the Cats played the Miners even in the third quarter. Axel Anderson, who earlier in the game batted down a pass, blocked a punt in the third quarter, and Wyatt Stevens scooped it up and ran 13 yards for a defensive touchdown.
“We had them pinned down. The defense played spirited in the third quarter,” said Arthun. “We came out in the second half and fought back, but Wallace was just too big and physical for us.”
Arthun’s son Brock Arthun hauled in three touchdown catches for the Miners.
Clark Fork heads to Lakeside on Friday.
