Bulldogs split IEL tennis doubleheader

SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint tennis team split matches with Inland Empire League foes Lewiston and Post Falls on Tuesday in a doubleheader at Post Falls High School.

Alex Hon won in straight sets at No. 2 boys singles for the lone win, as Bulldogs head coach Kent Anderson called the 11-1 loss to Lewiston in the opener the most severe match he’s coached at Sandpoint.

“We arrived just as the three-way match began in windchills below 30 degrees and no warm-up,” described Anderson. “Some of our players sat in freezing temps for four hours before they got on the court.”

Hon also won his match against Post Falls, earning the praise of his coach.

“A major bright spot was Alex, who somehow had the best tournament of his career, steamrolling in both his matches,” said Anderson. “His serves and groundstrokes were almost perfect and he was able to elevate his game and play as if there was no 25 mile per hour wind hammering the players.”

Bailey Scrimsher continued her strong play at No. 2 girls singles, losing a tough 10-8 third set tie-breaker against Lewiston, before rebounding with a dominating showing against Post Falls.

Caroline Suppiger and Alavaro Garcia Rios played their first varsity matches, and Anderson said Brittany Beason played her best tennis ever during a long day of tennis.

Sandpoint hosts Lakeland today at 3 p.m. at Travers Park and Lakeview Courts.
