Bottomley, hot hitting lead Bulldogs in rout
SANDPOINT — Jordan Speelmon, Jessica Strickland, Lucy Calvert and Topi Elsfelder each had two hits to lead resurgent Sandpoint to an 11-1 win over Post Falls on Thursday in nonleague softball action at Sandpoint Middle School.
Elsfelder and Sam Bates each drove in two runs, and Cody Baldree, Calvert, Speelmon and Mamie Mitchell scored twice as the hot-hitting Bulldogs (2-5) earned the season sweep of the 5A Trojans. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the 10 run rule, but for once the Bulldogs were on the winning end of a shortened game.
“The 10 run win was pretty sweet,” said Bulldogs head coach Derek Dickenson, who liked his team’s aggressiveness at the plate. “We were going up there with the mentality of trying to make something happen. We scored some runs, and came back out and shut them down, building momentum.”
Casey Bottomley had another stellar game, tossing a three-hitter with the lone run unearned. She also struck out eight, giving her 20 in her past two games.
Katie McDermott had a hit and Heather Settle went the distance in defeat for the Trojans (2-11), who kept the game close until a seven run fourth inning.
The young and emerging Bulldogs now turn their attention to 5A power Coeur d’Alene, traveling south the face the Vikings in a doubleheader on Saturday.
