Bulldogs fall short against Timberwolves
SANDPOINT — It will go in the books as a loss, but considering two freshman did all of the pitching and the final margin of victory was the smallest of the season, Sandpoint’s 9-2 loss to 5A Lake City marked a step in the right direction in nonleague baseball action Thursday at Pine St. Field.
Tyler Newton allowed three runs in the first four innings, and the Bulldogs (0-12) trailed the Timberwolves 3-2 after four, playing their best baseball of the season in defeat.
“The goal is to get better every day and we made a large step today,” said Bulldogs head coach Chris Young. “We still need to tighten a few things up, but we’ve come a long way.”
Nate Stangel had two RBIs for Sandpoint, as five different players hit a single on the day. Zac Farrell and Quinn Pearlstein played steady, solid solid defense behind the freshman pitchers. Young praised the work of Newton and Paul Sundquist on the mound.
“They’re not flashy, they come out and throw strikes,” he said. “The other team put the ball in play, and let our defense play baseball.”
Sophomore Parker Gabrielson struck out four, and Ethan Brandt and Reilly Cherry had two hits apiece for Lake City (6-10).
Sandpoint travels south to face Lakeland in a 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader on Saturday.
