Bulldog golfers fifth at Sandpoint Invitational
SANDPOINT — The nine-hole Elks Golf Course in Sandpoint doesn’t appear too difficult when looking at the layout or scorecard, but traditionally it yields higher than normal scores for those who don’t play it often.
That was not the case for Lakeland’s Derek Bayley on Monday at the Sandpoint Invitational, as the junior carded a four-under par 66 to beat the field by 10 strokes and leed the Hawks to the team title, taking down 5A state powers Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston.
The small greens, abundant out-of-bounds possibilities and a trees were no problem for Bayley, who is being looked at by the University of Washington, among other schools. Preston Roth shot a 79, as the Hawks posted a 323, six shots better than three teams tied at second.
“If you get off the fairway you’re behind a tree,” said Bulldogs head coach and Elks pro Tom Tharp of the home course. “You better be darn accurate.”
David Currie led the Bulldogs with an 83, as the Bulldogs were able to beat Moscow despite not really playing their best golf on a course they practice on often.
“We beat Moscow, and that’s a feather in our cap,” said Tharp. “But we didn’t play up to our potential.”
Play was halted after five holes due to a hail storm, which was followed by plenty of wind and some sun.
The Sandpoint boys are at the Lakeland Invitational on Thursday at the Links Golf Course.
