Story, Durfee brothers lead Bulldogs past Bears

| April 30, 2013 7:00 AM

MOSCOW — Freshman Cassidy Story notched a straight set win at No. 2 girls singles, and Spencer Temple and Nicolette Jessen won a third set tie-breaker 9-7 at No. 1 mixed doubles, leading the Bulldogs to a big 7-5 win over the Bears on Monday in a 4A Inland Empire League match in Moscow.

Bulldogs head coach Kent Anderson had high praise for the play of Story.

“She combines solid ground strokes with natural speed and determination,” he said. “Even in incredible winds, she was able to get in position to hit with consistency.”

Anderson also lauded the play of the Durfee brothers, as Dan won in straight sets at No. 3 boys singles, and Michael teamed up with Sadie Nitcy to earn the mixed doubles sweep.

“The Durfee brothers came to play today,” described Anderson. “Both played tenaciously.”

The Bulldogs are still mixing and matching as they try to find the strongest combinations to take down to state.

“I mixed up the lineup today in the effort to challenge the team,” said Anderson. “Many were playing positions a little outside their comfort zone.”

Sandpoint is at Lakeland today, while the JV team hosts the Hawks at Travers Park.
