End 'no turn on red' intersections
We spent millions building a bypass to help the flow of traffic in Sandpoint. As a result, the traffic in town has been reduced considerably.
However, the signal lights have the same basic time patterns as before. Particularly frustrating is the intersection at Fifth and Cedar, where one often must wait for what seems like forever for the lights to change when there is no traffic.
Complicating this are the “no turn on red” signs. Since we no longer have all those trucks taking up two lanes to turn north from Cedar, why do we still need the “no right turn on red”? The only reason for the “no left on red” sign is that a pedestrian was killed a few years ago by a driver turning left onto Fifth at that intersection. It is too bad that happened, but we are not required to stop at every fatal crash site to honor those who have been killed by drivers. Why this one?
I sometimes go through this intersection 20 times or more in a day, and have killed time by timings these lights. Just let me know if you want specifics. Also I see so many traffic violations at this intersection it is unbelievable. If the city posted a full-time officer at Fifth and Cedar they could fill the city coffers and reduce taxes!
When I complained to the city, I was told that it is a state highway, so the city has no voice. I contacted the state of Idaho and they said they were just following the city’s wishes.
If you are also frustrated by this intersection, please let the city and/or state know. Maybe if enough people complain we can get this intersection changed to a more realistic and efficient one. At least remove the “No turn on red” signs!
