Issue is one of corporate greed

| December 3, 2013 6:00 AM

I agree that people should be able to make informed food choices through labeling, but the costs of compliance for GMO labeling will be a disaster for the small farmer. Imagine the costs to our local and regional farmers who have to pay for lab tests and inspections required for compliance with labeling laws. The corporate farmer need only bide their time while their competition — small independent farmers — fade away from the costs associated with testing.

Also, independent organic farmers are finding GMO plants growing in their fields as well as finding genetically engineered ingredients in their animal feed that was labeled “organic.” Scientists and government regulators have no control over GMO crops and companies like Monsanto will sue for patent infringement if their seeds are found in your fields. Why have 26 countries banned GMO crops?

This is not an issue about “feeding the world.” It is about corporate greed and control over our food sources. GMOs need to be banned.
