Women served U.S. during World War I

I read in a recent Dear Abby that there were no women in the service before World War II. That is not true.
My stepmother was in the Navy in World War I and they were called the Yomenettes — this was way before the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service).
