Filibusters encourage political compromise

| December 10, 2013 6:00 AM

The Democrat senators have broken the rules, by a simple majority vote, to change the rules to discontinue the 200-plus year old Senate rule of filibustering and eliminate the two-thirds rule regarding advise and consent.

Filibustering provided limited power to the minority and helped to make the Senate the “deliberative” body, encouraging compromises. We should ask ourselves if democracy has now come to mean “of the majority, by the majority, and for the majority” and then consider the consequences of that.
