Sandpoint boys and girls swept by West Valley

| December 14, 2013 6:00 AM

SPOKANE — Hailey Olin posted a double-double, but a slow start proved too much to overcome, as the Bulldogs fell 56-45 to West Valley in nonleague girls basketball Friday night in Spokane.

Olin scored 17 points to go with 11 rebounds and four assists to lead the Bulldogs (4-5), who were outscored 14-4 in the first period. The Bulldogs, who typically get to the line with great regularity, made just one free throw on the night while the Eagles were 12-16.

“Cold shooting is becoming a consistent trend in the first quarter,” said Bulldogs head coach Bill Bender. “We were unable to crack the scoreboard for nearly seven minutes. We closed to six on several runs, but in the end, free throws were the deciding margin.”

Karlee Williams scored seven points to go with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, Maryah Delgado scored 13 and dished out four assists, and Madi Schoening scored eight points to go with four rebound and three steals in defeat.

Sandpoint hosts Timberlake on Tuesday.

SPOKANE — Sandpoint shot well from beyond the arc, but it was rebounding that ultimately did them in, as the Bulldogs lost 65-48 to West Valley in nonleague boys hoops on Friday night.

Jeremiah Gagnon scored 13 points and drained three 3-pointers, and Thomas Edwards and Matthew Timothy each hit two from beyond the arc for the Bulldogs (3-2), who played their fifth straight road game to start the season.

“We shot fairly well from three point land. We played really good defense, but had a hard time on the boards. They (Eagles) had a lot of second chance opportunities,” said Bulldogs head coach Tyler Haynes. “We haven’t worn our white uniforms yet, we’ve been the road warriors. We’ll finally be at home for Moose Madness.”

Carlos Collado had five rebounds, and Matthew Burgstahler and Nathan Schwartz each had three assists in defeat.

Jay Love scored 30 points to lead West Valley, traditionally a strong basketball program.

Sandpoint hosts Bonners Ferry on Friday during the Moose Madness spirit game.
