Cold second quarter dooms Wampus Cats

| December 20, 2013 6:00 AM

CLARK FORK — It was a tale of two quarters for the Wampus Cats in the first half of a 43-28 loss to Mullan on Thursday in North Star League girls basketball at Clark Fork High School.

Clark Fork (0-5, 0-1 NSL) came out crisp offensively, building a 13-8 first quarter lead, before shooting woes returned in the second quarter, where the Cats were outscored 20-0 to change the complexion of the game.

“That killed us,” said Clark Fork head coach Mark Stevens of the second quarter drought. “We just didn’t hit shots. That’s all that was.”

Sophomore Leslie Kiebert led the Cats with 14 points and eight rebounds, and drained three 3-pointers in the second half to help end the scoring drought. Callie Potter finished with seven steals, providing some strong perimeter defense, Lyndsie Kiebert scored eight points and Alicia Heigis pulled down eight rebounds in defeat.

Charli Sadler led the Tigers (4-4, 1-1 NSL) with 16 points.

Clark Fork gets a two-week holiday break in the schedule, before hosting Selkirk on Jan. 3.

n Bowen’s 16 points not enough as Cats fall to Tigers

CLARK FORK — Rebounding and free throws are two things the Clark Fork boys usually hang their hats on, but it was Mullan that won those battles, earning a 52-47 win over Clark Fork in North Star League boys basketball on Thursday night.

Brandan Bowen hit four 3-pointers and scored a season-high 16 points, and Tristin Bristol added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Wampus Cats (1-4, 0-1 NSL), who fell behind early and could never regain the lead.

“It came down to they (Mullan) out-hustled us. Rebounding and free throws beat us, and that’s usually our strong suit,” said Cats head coach Corey Vogel. “We started a little slow again and had to chisel our way out. They packed it down on our big men pretty well.”

Nick Oas dished out five assists and Geoffry Boudousquie finished with five steals in defeat.

T.J. Placencio poured in a game-high 19 points and Hunter Kotschevar and Tyler Henderson scored 14 each, accounting for all but five of the Tigers (1-4, 1-0 NSL) points on the night. The Tigers got to the line 31 times, while the Wampus Cats shot 11 free throws, which proved the difference.
