Hawks down Bulldogs
SANDPOINT — Lakeland drained eight 3-pointers, propelling the Hawks to a 51-38 win over the Bulldogs in a 4A Inland Empire League showdown on Friday night at Les Rogers Court.
Thomas Edwards led the Bulldogs (2-17, 0-4 4A IEL) with 11 points, and Chase Rodriguez scored 10 to go with seven boards and two blocks, as the Bulldogs trailed by just two points heading into half.
Matt Horne scored 14 points to lead the Hawks (10-10, 2-2 4A IEL), Alex Opland added 12 points and four steals, Scott Simpson five points and seven boards and Tyrel Derrick seven assists as the Hawks pulled away in the second half after adjusting to the Bulldogs’ zone defense.
“We haven’t seen much zone and we weren’t used to it,” said Hawks coach Dave Stockwell. “Defensively, I thought we turned it up when we needed to.”
Sandpoint leading scorer Jeremiah Gagnon, who had his first varsity dunk against Post Falls recently, was held to eight points, and T.J. Alsager pulled down seven rebounds in defeat for Sandpoint, which kept the game at single digits into the fourth quarter.
Nick Nelson, Isaiah Lutz and Sam Silberman were honored on Senior Night before the tip-off. Nelson seized the moment, heading up into the stands to ask Brooke Obaitek out to the senior prom as his friends unfurled a banner above the court.
Sandpoint hosts Coeur d’Alene tonight in the final regular season game before the district tournament.
