Don't sell off our lands to the highest bidder
I am writing in response to Rep. Eric Anderson’s opinion, published in the Daily Bee on Jan. 27. Rep. Anderson opined that it would be in Idaho’s best interests to assume control over our national forests and public lands. While it might be in the best interests of a select few, I’m not sure it’s in the best interests of the greater good.
Consider that under the Idaho Constitution, state lands must be managed to generate the maximum possible profit. That means selling of state land resources to the highest bidder. Worst yet, it could mean selling off the land itself to the highest bidder. All other multiple use values, such as clean water, recreation, fish, wildlife, and public access get sidelined under state law.
Hopefully Rep. Anderson and the Idaho Legislature will come to learn that our public lands are one of our greatest assets. For me, proximity to public lands is why I choose to live in Idaho.
