Host of first period pins propel hungry Bulldogs

| January 9, 2013 6:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Brent Buchmiller (126 pounds) and Tanner McNelly (113) set the tone early with solid first period pins, leading Sandpoint to a 46-34 win over Priest River in a wrestling dual on Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.

Bulldog head coach Mike Randles liked how his young team came out on the offensive and ready to wrestle.

“Brent came out 100 miles per hour, and when you’re going like that things are going to happen for you,” said Randles, also impressed by McNelly’s pin. “Tanner used his technique and it paid off for him.”

Josh Travers (220), Adam Weindl (195) and Tyler Brown (182) also earned first period pins, helping the Bulldogs end a streak of several straight dual losses to the Spartans.

Returning state placer Dallas Hopkins (145) pinned Tyler Presser in the first period to lead the Spartans. Randles said it was huge for Presser to fill that weight, as it helped set the lineup for the dual win.

“We still have a long way to go because we’re so young and green,” said Randles, whose entire team is underclassmen. “We’re still on a big learning curve, still have mistakes and inconsistency.”

The Bulldogs will face Columbia and Nampa in a tri-match on Thursday at Lakeland High School, then compete in the River City Duals in Post Falls over the weekend.
